Re-lace to ace the best fit!

Often, we have patients present in clinic that struggle with ill fitting footwear, especially when it comes to shoes with laces. Most of the time they either can’t get the shoe tight enough to stop their heel slipping out or can’t get the shoe loose enough to stop their toes from going numb.

If this sounds like you, or someone you know, read on below where we cover our top two re-lacing techniques that address those problems

1.       Volume lacing – people with high insteps commonly experience a ‘pins and needles’ in their instep or numbness in their toes due to pressure from their laces. By using the volume lacing technique, you simply skip lacing across the tightest fitting part of the shoe.

2.       Lock lacing – people with narrow heels or patients that use orthotics can find that their heel will slip out of the back of the shoe. By using the lock lacing technique, the shoe hugs tighter around the ankle, reducing the movement/sensation

Both techniques are very easy to try on your own shoes. If you feel that you may need further assessment of your feet to ensure the best fit of your shoe, our podiatrists are highly trained in this area and are happy to help.
